February's Events

The Winter has been mild so far, but the long nights of darkness remain.  This month is named from the Latin "febris" from the Roman goddess Juno Februata, Juno the Fructifier who answers womens' prayers for children during the Parentalia, Feb 13-18.  This festival coincides with the Feralia, the festival of love, the fore runner of our current St. Valentines Day.  Many cultures around the world have "Hope of Spring" festivals in this month, all centered around February 2nd, the cross-quarter day between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox.  In the Celtic tradition, this is Brighids Day, or Imbloc, a fire festival for the return of the Light, new Candles, Purification, Poetry and Healing.  The Celtic Tree for this month is Saille, the Willow, long used as a remedy for fevers and rhuematism and the "damp diseases" of winter and close confinement.  Modern science has confirmed the presence of aspirin (salicylic acid) in Willow Bark, proving the legend is based on a biochemical fact.

Japan celebrates Setsuburn, bean throwing and lantern lighting festival dedicated to the sun goddess Ameratsu and the return of Spring.  China celebrates Li Chum, "Spring is Here" dedicated to Kwan Yin, the goddess of mercy.

Here in the US we take a light-hearted approach, celebrating February 2 as Groundhog Day, wherein we ascribe season predicting powers to the Groundhog.  The most famous of these is Punxsutawney Phil from Pennsylvania who comes out of his den with pomp and ceremony to predict an early or late Spring by the presence of absence of his shadow.  It's all in good fun, but it doesn't really matter if the rodent prophet sees his shadow; February 2nd is exactly halfway to the Spring Equinox which means six more weeks of Winter.
